X/Twitter Algorithms - Shadowbans explained
Unfair Automated Shadowbans on X/Twitter only motivate me to understand them.
Greetings everyone. You’ve probably seen information like this used to simplify the twitter algorithm without really understanding what’s happening. Elon Musk talks a good game about “open sourcing” the algorithm while hiding the specifics of the shadowbans on people and subjects.
You might run into one of these automated or user triggered bans for any number of reasons. I don’t have all the answers on how it happens yet, but I am beginning to understand it’s not the right way to handle the free speech town square of social media in order to provide everyone with an equal voice.

So, in this mode which you can verify for yourself here. Only your closest circle will see anything you post at all in your feed. It’s roughly 10% normal traffic so there is enough of a drip from people you know not to realize what’s really going on. That way, you just pull back or modify your engagement with the platform because you think your content isn’t worthwhile. It’s frankly insidious if you’re a creator relying on a platform like this to boost your content. And as someone who paid for Twitter Blue being subjected to this unfair and automated secret banning, I am trying to raise awareness in order to stop the policy, or at the very least make it open and transparent like it’s should be.
And they might say. If you’re paying attention to numbers and analytics we gave you, then you can see it, but that’s not transparency, that’s simply Elon using security through obscurity to provide the platform with plausible deniability for secret and selective censorship.
So, IF they click a content wanting past that stage, that also says it may contain “sensitive content” they can choose to see the post, but they get no engagement otherwise whatever. All suppressed. And this isn’t just on posts with certain word and phrase filters like you might expect, if you’re serious about harassment free free speech like Mr. Musk claims to be.
